A real safari experience as a day trip from Zanzibar to Mikumi National park. the fourth largest National park in Tanzania, famous for its healthy populations of elephants and buffaloes which can easily be spotted out on the plains. Departure from Zanzibar airport at 07h00, arrive in Selous Mtemere Airstrip at 08h00 you will be received by our safari guide. Immediately you will start a safari game drive, sightseeing the game in the park, driving through the savannah and along the river and lakes. Picnic lunch at lunchtime in a stunning location with a clear view of the park.

Then proceed with your journey exploring the African bushes before returning to the airstrip at around 16h00 for your scheduled flight back to Zanzibar.

The Selous Game Reserve is one of the largest faunal reserves of the world, located in the south of Tanzania. It was named after Englishman Sir Frederick Selous, a famous big game hunter and early conservationist, who died at Beho Beho in this territory in 1917 while fighting against the Germans during World War I. The Selous was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 due to the diversity of its wildlife and undisturbed nature.

The reserve covers a total area of 54,600 km2 and has additional buffer zones. Within the reserve no permanent human habitation or permanent structures are permitted. Some of the typical animals of the savanna (are African Bush Elephants, Black Rhino, Hippo, Lions, Wild Dogs, Cheetahs, Cape Buffaloes, Giraffes and Nile crocodiles) can be found in this park in larger numbers than in any other African game reserve or national park.

The Mikumi flood plain dominates the park, where lion is commonly seen as are packs of wild dog, a rarity elsewhere in Africa. Leopard, Giraffe, elephant, zebra, buffalo, wildebeest, eland, crocodiles, monitor lizard and python are some of the many inhabitants of Mikumi.

See the historical sites of Zanzibar’s slave trading past. Visit Dhow Harbor in Malindi, where slave ships brought their human cargo from Bagamoyo to Zanzibar. See the house of a notorious Arab slave trader - Tippu Tip and the site of the Old Slave Market/Anglican Cathedral, visit Mbweni Ruins, formerly a school for freed slave girls, Visit Dr. David Livingstone's House, Maruhubi Ruins and the last stop is at Mangapwani Slave Chamber where slaves were kept waiting for monsoon winded boats to fetch them and to be exiled.The larger cave also used to house slaves is still being used today as a source of fresh water for local villages. This tour highlights not only the depth of human misery but also the strength of endurance as these poor souls were trapped against their in horrendous heat and conditions awaiting transfer to foreign parts of the world.

Mikumi is a town in Morogoro region adjacent to the National park bearing the same name. This park is in the southern part of the country as opposed to the popular northern parks of Serengeti and Ngorongoro. It is at the cross roads to the Ruaha river valley and Kilombero sugar factory, and the southern highland regions of Iringa and Mbeya. It is near the larger town of Kidodi. Kidodi is near a railway station and junction of the Tanzania Railway Corporation.
