Walking in Tavira: The Venice Of Algarve is a Self-guided Walking Tour based in Tavira, in the East Algarve. Specially designed to explore the Algarve's countryside and the natural wonders of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, this walking tour is a treat for those who love nature coastal hikes full of wildlife, but also inland walks in overlooked parts of the Algarve, peaceful and rich in traditions.

These 11 days tour will give you the opportunity to meet the small town of Tavira, an ancient Moorish town that has retained its unique character and heritage. Layers of history can be seen, from Phoenician excavations through Islamic-decorated doorways to Renaissance and Baroque flourishes. However, it is the colours that hit you: blinding-white walls, brilliant azulejo tiles, fiery-red pantiles.

It extends along the river Gilão, which arrives to the sea through the entrances of the lagoons of the Natural Park of Ria Formosa.

The Island of Tavira has a long sandy beach and salinas that attract flamingos, spoonbills and other wading birds. In the centre, the medieval castle of Tavira offers views of the city. The Church of Santa Maria do Castelo houses the tombs of 7 knights killed by the Moors.

Our walks take us to Tavira Island in the Natural Park, taking in one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and to pretty coastal villages such as Santa Luzia, Cabanas and Cacela Velha. Inland we wind our way between hills and valleys to the low peak of Zimbral, with wide rewarding views. 

Ancient trails take us past farms, through an intricate patchwork of orange groves, olive and carob orchards. Sometimes we walk beside rivers; other times amongst the pinesand cork oaks. Through most of our season we are presented with an endless and everchanging procession of beautiful flowers.

The western Algarve is a complete contrast to the eastern Algarve, and our walks throughout this tour offer a glorious mix of coastal, mountain and inland scenery.
