The exhibition located in old garner presents seven centuries worth of the history of European art, utilizing over 1 00 paintings and sculptures. This collection was gathered since the founding of the Museum through year 1879, mainly as gifts, and was not initially covered with a specific policy, as the Museum (as indicated by its name) was focused mainly on the Polish works of art.

The permanent exhibition is housed in the Jan Matejko’s family home (1838-1893), the greatest Polish artist working in the genre of history painting, a collector and an enthusiast for monuments, particularly those in Cracow. The old Cracow building (rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries) is the place where Jan Matejko was born, lived with his family, created his paintings and passed away.

Lady with an Ermine is a painting by Leonardo da Vinci from around 1489–1490 and one of Poland's national treasures. The subject of the portrait is Cecilia Gallerani, painted at a time when she was the mistress of Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan, and Leonardo was in the service of the duke. The painting is one of only four portraits of women painted by Leonardo considered by many to be the most beautiful.
