You will make Okonomiyaki, miso soup & rice. You will experience the traditional style of Japanese cooking and wearing Kimono style chef jacket.

This is a unique 2-hour Japanese cooking experience for tourists and residents alike. Participants will make either Maki rolled sushi, tamago yaki (or rolled omelette) and miso soup. Choose from one of two (2) start times when you book.

The program offers tea ceremony experience at Japanese traditional room. In the beginning, an instructor will explain about tea ceremony history and a set of instruments. After that, you can watch the demonstration and experience making Japanese green tea on your own.

Your experience will begin with a visit to the local supermarket where your host Masao will teach you about the local produce on offer. You'll learn how to choose the freshest produce and hear about Japanese ingredients you may not be familiar with. Together you'll purchase a few things for your cooking class before you get to craft what you've bought into an authentic Japanese meal with expert advice from a professional chef in his home kitchen!

Back home, your hands-on cooking class will begin. As you chop, stir-fry, assemble and sauté, you'll learn about Japanese cuisine and some of Masao's favorite cooking techniques. He'll teach you about sourcing the freshest ingredients, explain how to vary recipes, and show you ways to make your dishes look gorgeous. You might prepare teriyaki chicken, takikomi-gohan (steamed, seasoned rice with vegetables and chicken), Kinpira-gobou (sweetened soy-flavored burdock root) and Japanese spinach topped with sesame.

Your local host Yoshiko will take you on a supermarket tour of her neighborhood which will last about 45 minutes. As you explore the shops where she purchases different ingredients, she will teach you about where the products are made and the history behind them. You may purchase a few ingredients for your cooking class before driving home together.

After the market tour, you will join Yoshiko in her kitchen and learn to prepare 4-5 Japanese home style dishes from scratch! Yoshiko will have you start by showing you how to make dashi stock, the Japanese foundation that most dishes are based on. You will learn how to use dashi instead of water when preparing Japanese cuisine to bring out the unique umami flavor of each dish. The cooking portion of your experience will last about an hour before you sit down to enjoy the food. 

This is a wonderful way to get a glimpse into the life of a Japanese local and experience the country's culture and cuisine first-hand!

About KOYASAN(Mt.koya)
Koyasan(literally “Mt.koya”) is home to an active monastic center founded 1,200 years ago by the priest Kukai as a place of religious study. He sought to establish a monastery deep in the mountains, a retreat far from worldly distractions where Buddhist monks could practice their faith and pray for peace and the welfare of the people.As its mountainous name suggests, Koyasan is situated in a valley atop a highland (altitude 900m).

In the morning, visit the “Heijo Palace;” one of the World Heritage site “Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara.” This is the remains of the ancient capital of Japan. Some of the architecture has been reconstructed in the same scale and style from ancient times; such as “Imperial Audience Hall” where various rituals were conducted, “Suzaku-mon Gate” which was the front gate to the palace, and “Suzaku-oji Avenue” which was the main street of the ancient capital. Let’s explore and think about the people who built the Japanese capital more than 1,300 years ago, and experience some of ancient lives and cultures.
 In the afternoon, you will visit a castle town “Yamato koriyama” prospered in and after the 16th century. Enjoy strolling through the castle town, where traditional Japanese streetscapes and lives still remain.
