Day Trip to Iceland's Beautiful South Coast from Reykjavik

Programul activitatii

Enjoy a comprehensive, 9.5-10 hour day tour around the south coast of Iceland.

The day starts with complimentary pick up from hotels and guesthouses within the greater Reykjavik area. Pick-up starts at 8am and at 8:30am the tour leaves from Harpa, music and conference hall in downtown Reykjavik where the base is located. The size of the coach you will be travelling on depends on how many people are booked for the tour. It could be a 16 seater minibus or a 50 seater coach.

We will drive straight out of town heading for the south coast, and after driving for approximately 1.5 hours through Iceland's scenery we will take a short break at Hvolsvöllur, where passengers can use the bathrooms or buy coffee (own expense).

The next stop on the tour is the majestic waterfall Skógafoss, and from there we will drive up to Reynisfjara beach where it's possible to see the black sands and basaltic columns. Usually we stop for lunch at Reynisfjara (own expense) but in some cases we may go to the small village of Vík and stop there instead. From Reynisfjara we will head to cape Dyrhólaey, the southernmost point of Iceland, where you can see its magnificent ocean cliffs.

The tour then takes passengers to Sólheimajökull glacier where we take approximately a 15 minute walk up to the glaciers edge, on some days it's possible to walk close enough to touch the glacier.

From Sólheimajökull it is around a 30 minute drive to the waterfall Seljalandsfoss. When the weather is mild it is possible to walk behind it. Seljalandsfoss is the last stop of the day and from there it's approximately a 2-hour drive back to Reykjavík where passengers will be dropped off back at their hotel/guesthouses.

Please note that drop off might be close to your hotel rather than at the hotel door - this depends on accessibility.

This tour involves some short, relatively easy walks on the sites visited. It's recommended that you dress warmly because the weather in Iceland can change very quickly.

The trip was excellent! Our tour guide, Anna, was very knowledgable regarding both Icelandic culture and geography. The vistas were superb; waterfalls, glacier, black sand beach (and sheep!). We saw more that we had anticipated seeing. We took the smaller bus (deluxe tour) which was very enjoyable. We had a fair amount of time at each site. I highly recommend this tour. I would take it again.

I am so, so impressed with Sterna Travel and the wonderful guide of my tour, Annie. She was so informative and funny and laid-back. She seemed to really enjoy answering all of our questions about Iceland's history and fauna. The weather also happened to be fabulous on this day, making the whole trip even better. We saw some awesome sights and even got a couple of extra stops in because it was such a small group of people. Thank you so much, Annie, for making this such a fun experience! Can't recommend this company and specific tour enough.

The weather was all over the place but there are almost no words for how beautiful Iceland is in the winter. Our tour guide was THE BEST. He was very knowledgeable, hit all the places we were meant to see, gave us enough time at all the stops and even snuck in a few not on the list. But most importantly, he was really funny and kept us all awake and entertained throughout the 10-hour trip. I only caught his last name - Mimirsson. I cannot recommend this tour enough.

Unfortunately we had a cloudy day, but Chris was a great guide. Very informative and rearranged our stops to make sure we could see everything despite the weather. Highly recommended!

This trip was amazing. We were in a small van that held about fifteen people and our guide also did all of the driving. I've been on a lot of tours and I'd never seen that before--a guide both guiding and driving, but the woman in charge was phenomenal at both. Sterna Travel, if you see this, please give the woman who ran the October 11th tour a raise--she definitely deserves it : She provided loads of information about the attractions we were visiting as well as Icelandic social and cultural background. She gave us tips about how to get the best experiences at each of the stops and she took us on a hike out to the edge of a glacier, which is something you don't get with some of the bigger South Coast tours.

We had plenty of time to explore each of the stops, which were an Icelandic greenhouse, Skogafoss Waterfall, Vik, Reynisfjara black sand Beach, a second stop overlooking the black sand beach that I think had to do with Game of Thrones, the edge of the glacier, and Seljalandfoss Waterfall, that you can walk behind. I highly recommend the tomato soup at the greenhouse stop--it's one of the more affordable food options and it was so delicious. Overall this is a great value for your money made even better by a fantastic guide who answered questions, provided information, but then let us rest on the way back to Reykjavik when many of us were tired after a long day. I would recommend it to anyone looking to see more of Iceland beyond the more popular Golden Circle tour. The only downfall is that it doesn't go all the way to Jakusarlon to the glacier lagoon, another breathtaking sight you should try to make it to eventually.

If you do just two tours in Iceland this should be one of them. The Golden Circle is not to be missed, but the South Coast is incredible too! Seeing the black beach, the waterfalls, Vik, and more made this a part of our Iceland visit that we would not have wanted to miss.

Definitely recommend this tour. It was my favorite. The amount of time at each stop was perfect and our tour guide Ardis was wonderful. I liked the smaller group that we had to travel with, it made for more flexible stops.

    Iceland's Landa
Iceland's landscape is magical and Claus' knowledge of the South Coast was excellent. Beautiful sites included the Skogafoss waterfall with its stairway to the top for another view, then Reynisfjara, a black sand beach. The waves were roiling and thunderous and the gray basalt columns are very unusual. We hoped to see puffins but they were out to sea feeding. I especially liked the Solheimajokull Glacier. If we'd had another day, I definitely would have taken a walking tour there. Our other major stop was the gorgeous Sejljalandsfoss waterfall. We didn't walk behind it as we were already cold and wet from the rain. The tour company is well organized with its pick ups and deliveries which our on time.

We really enjoyed our tour of the South Coast. Not only were the sights amazing, our driver Fred gave us a lot of information about Iceland itself along the way. We saw lots of hay, sheep and horses too! Wifi on the bus was a big plus.

Our whole family including two children 11 and 12 really loved this tour done via Sterna Travels and highly recommend it. Our tour guide Klaus was fantastic, friendly, very knowledgeable, and shared all kinds of fascinating details, gladly answering any questions, including cultural, historical, environmental, political, all with great humor and enthusiasm. It was clear that he loved Iceland and what he was doing. A highlight of the tour for me was being able to walk right up to the Sólheimajökull glacier and touch it. It is important to be very careful around glaciers and Klaus was great about clarifying exactly which areas were to be avoided and which were safer. Do pay attention to your guides. Both waterfalls were absolutely gorgeous and walking behind the Seljalandsfoss waterfall is one of the most beautiful sensual experiences ever. We will always have great memories of this trip.

I would highly recommend this tour when traveling to Iceland. The sites were amazing! The tour guide Kris was very knowledgeable giving us details about the sites and he answered any questions that we had without hesitation. Kris gave us the opportunity to take pictures and he also gave us some time on our own without feeling rushed. The stops we had throughout the day were well chosen and we felt that we definitely got our money's worth. Loved it!!

Really nice trip. We got to see wonderful waterfalls and you really get up close and personal to them. Wear waterproof gear to really get to appreciate them as you can walk behind one of them but you definitely get wet. It is really worth it though and you dry off quickly. We were very fortunate to have a lovey day which helped but you are in Iceland so dress appropriately to ensure you can get to experience it and don't let your clothing hold you back. I would definitely recommend the trip.

We had an amazing tour guide who explained things all along the way. He gave us much needed time at all the stops for us to explore.
The sights we saw on this excursion were memorable. I would recommend this tour to anyone who wants a little taste of Iceland.

Fantastic tour. A lot is packed in to this 10 hour day. The South Coast is breathtaking as you take in two fantastic waterfalls - Skogafoss and Seljalandfoss which you can walk behind. Bring a waterproof jacket because you will get wet! Reynisfjara beach with its awesome basalt columns, black sand, and caves. Dyrohaely was good but there were no puffins which was a disappointment.
And an incredible experience walking up to Solheim glacier I can't spell it so I shortened it which gives you the feeling of being on another planet. Klaus was a great guide and he added touches of humor. It was nice that we had a smaller group 13 and a smaller bus. It made it easier to leave at the end of the day. There were a couple guests that were consistently late in coming back to the bus to go to the next point but this wasn't the fault of the tour operator at all. If you do one tour in Iceland, make it the South Coast!

Once in a lifetime adventure. Comfortable ride, WiFi on board and charging system in place! The places we visited are breathtaking. I'm bad with names but please know our tour guide was wonderful. We did our tour on the 15th of April 2017. Thank you Sterna Travel!

Fantastic day going out to see the waterfalls, glacier, black sand beach.
At least 30 minutes spent at each location.
Because a lot is packed in one day so expect an early start and strict time slots at each location,
but we had enough time to enjoy each location.
    Comfortable new coach.

Excellent tour! We were on a smaller bus which I think made a huge difference vs a big bus. The tour guide was fantastic and the different stops were breathtaking.
