Depart the port of Corfu with direction to Achillion Palace. Upon arrival,leave your vehicle and follow your guide to visit the famous Palace,which was constructed in 1892 for the Empress Elisabeth of Austria.This ill-fated Empress obsessed by the Greek hero, Achilles, commissioned a statue of Achilles “Dying”. In 1907, the Palace was bought by Kaiser William II of Germany, who erected a contrasting statue, of Achilles “Triumphant”. Today, both statues are still standing in the gardens.

As you drive inland, see the traditional villages, drive through Ropa Valley to arrive at Gastouri village. The village of Gastouri is set amid beautiful scenery on a green hillside. Dominating the hilltop is the Achilleion Palace, built for the Empress Elizabeth of Austria, the renowned Sissy, in 1890-91 by the Italian architect Kapita. 

Near Achilleion Palace is situated a local Ceramics workshop Tsami Ceramics, where they create handmade ceramics continuing the tradition of 7000 years of pottery in Corfu. We visit the workshop and showroom and watch the process of creating a ceramic gift from an expert artist.

 

Departing from the port, your coach follows the road leading out of town; soon you are in the lush Corfiot countryside. Kerkyra is the most verdant of all the Greek Islands and this becomes at once apparent as you are driven through orange, lemon cypress and olive groves, interspersed with vineyards and fields carpeted with beautiful wild flowers, like a garden in Paradise which has been decorated by the Gods themselves.
