The capital of the republic, Petrozavodsk, has the status of a "historic" city of Karelia. The emergence of Petrozavodsk is associated with the name of Emperor Peter the Great and the turbulent historical events of the beginning of the 18th century: the struggle for Russia's access to the Baltic world, the European manner, and the active development of industrial production in an agricultural country.
Onega Embankment is one of the most beautiful places in the city, a favorite place for walks and recreation of citizens. Its construction began in the second half of the 20th century, and on the Day of the City, June 25, 1994, its opening took place. In July 2002, construction of the second line of the embankment along Lake Onega began in Petrozavodsk. The second stage of the embankment, 500 m long, passes in the area of a historic building, therefore its appearance is made in the style of the XIX century.
