Small-Group Aurora Hunt Northern Lights Tour from Tromso

Programul activitatii

Your Northern Lights hunting tour begins with pickup at the Tromsø city center. With your guide, head out to the countryside around Tromsø, or potentially cross the border into Finland if the weather conditions are better there.

When you find a nice place with clear skies, your guide will set up camp with a bonfire, where you can settle in, relax with homemade soup, and take some pictures. Sometimes you have to wait for the Aurora Borealis to appear, while other times, you may be lucky enough to enjoy the show for the whole evening. Mother Nature makes that decision for you, but your guide will make sure that you have everything else covered for an enjoyable tour.

Please dress warmly, we supply thermal suits but you must also dress appropriately for the Arctic conditions.

We chose to visit Tromsø during our vacation because we heard (from reviews and friends) that it was the best place to try and see the Northern Lights. I found Wandering Owl after a lot of research and after booking realized that it was the same company my friend used previously (and loved)! Our adventure with Wandering Owl was an absolute highlight of our entire vacation. Karolis, our guide, was a joy. He picked us and six others up from Tromsø city center and drove us to a frozen lake just over an hour away. During the drive he shared a lot of information about the area, his experience in Norway, and his expertise in biology. When we made it to the spot, he fashioned a bench out of snow with a shovel and built a fire. Although the sky was covered in clouds and it snowed on and off, he kept the group engaged. The entire evening was extremely well planned. Dinner soups were served in individual thermoses. I requested the lentil soup (vegetarian, dairy free, and gluten free) and was really impressed with it. With my dietary restrictions, I typically bring my own snacks for events because it’s difficult for others to accommodate. Karolis and Wandering Owl were one of a kind - not only did Karolis have a separately wrapped pouch with gluten free bread just for me, he also had homemade gluten free and vegan cookies for me for dessert, and the hot chocolate at the end of the night was made of rice milk! Later in the night, Karolis took photos of everyone in the group, which he emailed out the next day. When it looked like we would be heading back to Tromsø without seeing the lights, there was a brief break in the clouds. We all stood quietly in the snow and could see the dimmest of aurora borealis. The entire experience was fantastic and we will absolutely do it again when we return to Tromsø.

The weather in Tromso on the night of our tour was cloudy and snowing and we had very small chance of seeing the northern lights. However, the guide and driver, Bart and Vitek, were very patient in finding the right place to view and went the extra mile to drive us to the border of Finland, Sweden and Norway. We saw the amazing northern lights dancing in the sky.

The northern lights hunt tour with wandering owl group was excellent! The conditions the night we went out didn't look promising however our guide, Jeff was optimistic and extremely knowledgeable. He ended up driving us into Finland where we set up our camp site and fire and got to enjoy the amazingness of the lights with delicious soup, hot chocolate and cookies.

This was the absolute highlight of the trip. Pablo was our guide and he visited several locations which were too overcast before we came to a frozen beach beside a lake. All necessary clothing was provided and you definitely need to be wrapped up. The sky was so clear you could see stars everywhere. We had a wonderful soup, then some biscuits and hot chocolate and then after waiting for a few hours the so-called tricky lady appeared in all her glory. Photographs can't do it justice, when the curtain of light falls in strips and then dances in front of you then the camera lens fails totally to capture the extraordinary beauty - you have to see them for yourself. If you absolutely must have to see them as part of your holiday then this is an ideal trip to book.

My husband and I did this through Wondering Owl and we loved the entire experience! We were able to see the Northern lights on multiple stops and our guide was amazing at explaining how to get our camera to capture them as well as why the Northern lights happen. I would recommend this tour to everyone wanting a fun and educating experience.

The day we took this tour proved not to be a night for aurora siting as it was snowing and cloud cover thick. Alex did his best and we drove north and south in search for the lights but sometimes it just doesn't happen with no fault of the guide. A lovely evening of fire and soup was eventually set up and we arrived back at the hotel at 1 am. Fortunately we had seen the lights 4 previous evenings and we were not disappointed with this evening despite the lights not being able to be seen.

Our guide Mixu was fantastic. He's incredibly knowledgeable about the lights and picks a location based on the weather and aurora forecast. He also frequently checks for updates. He not only helped us with our camera settings, but took lovely photos of us that we were emailed the next day. They provided head lamps, cold weather gear and also a warm meal. The homemade reindeer soup, bread, cookies and hot chocolate were all delicious. It was nice to have something warm while we were out in the cold. It was a small group, which was really nice too. He also dropped us off right at our hotel after the tour.

Seriously... there are so many similar tours that you could do... but trust me... do THIS one with Wandering Owl. I travel a lot, and this was one of the best nights of my entire life.

The tour was everything it was described as being. Our guide and our driver were experienced, knowledgable, enthusiastic, and a wealth of information. Yes, it was cold but the excitement of the hunt, the viewing of the lights, which were spectacular, and the camaraderie made the cold more than bearable. I hope to experience the lights again, and if I do, this will be my tour.

Amazing lights experience. Luckily we didn't have to go very far as the night was clear and the activity was high. We stopped and stopped the lights very soon after starting the tour and the guide was keen to help us take photos, lending tripods and helping with camera settings etc. We settled in the end on a scenic lake and waited: had an fantastic lights experience. Hot drinks and snacks provided, really good, best hot chocolate ever! We were incredibly lucky to see the lights for hours and our guide was very informative.
Great experience, highly recommended - but wrap up!

The trip was very enjoyable and our tour guide Tom was very kind and knowledgable. We had home made warm chocolate, saw some of the most beautiful Northern lights of the season, and had soups around a bonfire Tom made us. Our car broke down for a little while and had to get another van back, which made our experience even more fun and also had more time to take pictures of the Auroras.
I highly recommend this tour but make sure you're well dressed for the cold, with warm socks as well as it got under -10 degrees at some point and that is cold! Thanks again to Wander Owl Tours! -

This tour was amazing. Our guides were kind, knowledgeable and very up front with us from the beginning that the weather conditions were poor the night of our hunt. They even gave us the option to cancel or reschedule, but my friend and I decided to stick it out. And I'm so glad we did! Despite the poor weather conditions, we were able to see the lights! Just goes to show how committed our guides were to finding clear skies and giving us a memorable experience. Due to the weather, the clouds did begin to cause problems for us so we packed up and drove inland towards Finland were, despite the -20 degree Celsius temps, we found clear skies so we set up camp and enjoyed a bonfire and homemade reindeer stew. This was truly a magnificent experience that I would recommend to anyone. Can't wait for the opportunity to go again!
