The five cubic meter glacial deposit is mysteriously suspended between two rocks, with the location being a world of its own. It inspires to humbleness and gratitude for having been allowed the privilege to experience nature in its utmost purity, from the top of the world. Standing on the boulder itself is not for the faint of heart and visitors to Kjerag should be reminded that what this place has to offer is more than just an impressive boulder. Chances are you will be in awe of nature’s unmistakable beauty the entire trip, culminating with the breathtaking vistas over the Lysefjord. BASE jumpers challenge their limits on a regular basis from this majestic location and visitors may get the chance to see the “flying” daredevils in action.

Are you an early bird who enjoys the tranquility of hiking in near-solitude? Join Outdoorlife Norway on an early-morning summer hike to the famous Kjerag boulder, and enjoy the spectacular Lysefjord. Relax and savor the views while you’re transported by fjord cruise. Hike in small groups on trails that have been upgraded by Nepalese Sherpas, and enjoy the exhilaration of standing atop the boulder before the crowds of tourists arrive.
*On Saturdays, the speed ferry does not run and we will drive around the mountains. On Sundays, the trip’s itinerary is reversed: instead of at the start of the day, you’ll cruise through the Lysefjord during the afternoon, before traveling back to Stavanger.

LAKE CANOEING INCLUDED

Avoid the crowds by joining us on a ‘off the beaten track’ hike and enjoy a unique Preikestolen experience.  Hike in near-solitude while encountering out of this world views of Preikestolen and the Lysefjord – which only few have seen. You’ll embark on your trip by canoeing across Refsvatn Lake. During 70% of the hike, you’ll follow off-the-map trails which are overgrown and have (almost) been forgotten. You’ll experience out-of-this-world and rarely-seen views of Preikestolen and the Lysefjord. After about 3,5 hours on foot, you’ll reach a viewpoint of Preikestolen that the majority of others only get to see in tourist brochures.

Consider spending a day climbing the world’s longest wooden staircase. With its 4444 steps, Flørli is known to be one of the scariest stairs in the world. The climb is long and strenuous, but provides great lookout points where you can stop to catch your breath while enjoying the vista over the Lysefjord down below. This is a two-part hike that does not take you through the same scenery more than once. The descent follows the hundred-year old marked trail that was once used by the “Rallarer”. Rallarer were often underprivileged men that were employed in the 1800s Norway to help build infrastructure. They are remembered to have carried up to 80 kg loads on their backs, and are the ones that built the stairs along with the Flørli Hydroelectric Power Station at their base. The dam at Ternevatnet, which the return trail passes, also stands as a reminder of their mastery.
