Over 50 years ago, nature created Oostvaardersplassen, a swamp area that was left alone. Nature took possession of the new land and developed into a new wilderness: unique for the Netherlands and Europe.
In this bird-rich swamp area you encounter heck cattle, konik horses and red deer. All were born in freedom; calves and foals are born without human help and grow up on their mother's side. With their grazing they keep the grasslands open in a natural way. There are 31 bird species that are protected in Europe; for these this National Park is of (international) importance.
With a tourguide you drive from Amsterdam to the Outdoor Center (1hr), where you meet a ranger of State Forestry Service, a Dutch governmental organization dedicated to strengthen the position of nature in the Netherlands.
With the ranger you explore the national park in a 2-hr journey by Eco Car, a silent electrical cart; we want to go as far as possible to encounter many animals! Also great for kids!
