The Catacombs of St. Sebastian are the oldest underground cemeteries and one of the most important monuments of Ancient Rome. Already by the 1st Century AD a vast cemetery existed in this area, when in the 2nd Century the Christian presence became evident. The term “ad catacumbas” indicated specifically this place, although after the rediscovery of other underground cemeteries the

term was applied generically to all of them.
