It was built on the order of the Duke of Milan, Francesco I Sforza, to transform and elevate the former ancient Solariano convent. Its construction was completed in 1497 and at the request of the Duke, Ludovico il Moro, it was destined to become the mausoleum of the Sforza family.

Today, the Santa Maria delle Grazie is an UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of Milan’s finest examples of Renaissance and Gothic architecture.
