Corfu Albania Day Trip by Ferry with Optional Butrint Tour

Programul activitatii

Enjoy a day trip to the country of Albania.  Following your departure from Corfu, you will cruise along the Corfu and Albanian shores to reach the port of Ag. Saranda city. Once passports are checked, you will have free time to explore the city of Ag. Saranda.

On the optional tour you will travel on the mainland, you will pass small picturesque villages and endless fertile plains leading to a great lake. The highlight of your day will be the excursion to Butrint - designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage site in 1997. Over the centuries, the ancient town had disappeared under layers of silt and vegetation - but archaeologists have uncovered one of the best remains of a working town in the Mediterranean.

At the edge of the lake where the ancient city of Vouthrota is situated, with it's well maintained archaeological monuments and ancient theater, you will be taken 2500 years back in time to the 3rd century A.D. The ancient gymnasium, the Roman ablutions, the ancient temple with the priceless mosaic floor and the enormous stone walls will take you back to a time not known to man.

You will then head to the castle of Ali Passa, an oddment of the Ottoman Empire, which will provide you with a panoramic view of the Ancient City. On the return journey, you will have the option to stop at a restaurant for lunch (at own expense). Then, you will return to the city of Ag. Saranda where you will have free time to roam before your journey concludes with hotel drop-off.

I was travelling with parents and by this time, we had already done fair bit of touristing and walking in Greece, so we opted out of the Butrint trip. I was worried how we would kill time - as it happened, there was enough to do.
The trip itself is nice - a nice boat ride from Corfu to Albania. Once we reached Albania, we spoke to a few tour operators - a short walk from the port and rented a cab to visit - Blue Eyes and a local Fort and a drop in the touristy part of Sarande 50E, which was walking distance from the port.
Visit to Blue Eyes is strongly recommended - I was not too keen but thanks to push from the folks, we ended up going. Blue Eyes is spot where a stream originates and appears to strangely / inexplicably originate at the point of origin. Have some cash as the place has a couple of stores operated by local folks who sell local brandy and honey. The honey - is excellent and the brandy - makes for a good display!
Lëkurësi Castle, which is en route offers excellent views of Sarande and seemed to have a decent cafe. Due to a tour bus, we were forced to leave - our order cancelled, after just a round of beers. So be prepared for that!
Take the tour only if you interested in something unprogrammed and random and be pleasantly surprised as I was.

The Albania day trip combined a round trip ferry rife from Corfu, a visit to a mountain spring, exploration of a classical site, and visit to a modern city. For the most part the trip was highly informative and introduced Albania.

Albania is a beautiful country and the trip was easy. We opted for the archaeological site tour as well which was very interesting and the guides had a depth of knowledge with excellent English.
Downside- queuing to get on the boat whilst the staff tried to sell the tour extension as you board which took ages. From memory this was not available to purchase in advance on the viator site which if it was, would speed up the process and then not require such an early start.

Very helpful driver to pick us up from the hotel and drop us back in the evening. Bought tickets to Butrint as we got on the ferry. Slightly confusing on the Albanian dockside, but once on the coach all was well - a wonderful trip to Butrint and a knowledgeable guide. Fascinating site, lots to see. Buffet lunch in Saranda was included and then on to a bonus trip, the Blue Eye spring among Albanian mountains north of Saranda. Back in time for a coffee and a wander round Saranda before the ferry back. Great day and very good value.
