Founded in the 13th century, Ostrava has the beautiful squares and historic buildings you'd expect from a medieval European city, like the Old City Hall, the Academia Bookshop – a converted Habsburg-era cafe – and the Golden Crown pharmacy in Masaryk Square. The Art Deco New City Hall, crowned by a glass and metal tower is the Czech Republic's version of the Empire State Building, providing magnificent views of the city and the surrounding landscape. However, Ostrava's most emblematic monument is the Lower Vítkovice industrial complex. Built in the early 19th century, this tentative UNESCO site has been converted into a cultural center, with its gasometer now a concert hall, and the blast furnace part of a tour that brings visitors atop a 60-metre-high tower via industrial elevator. At the Landek Mining Museum, visitors will find the world's largest exhibition of mining technology, and can even take a guided tour of the original coal seams.
